4th Annual Meeting Ends Successfully

On January 23, the 4th Annual Meeting ended successfully with more than 100 participants. Twenty-five research papers were presented in oral and poster format. The panenl discussion titled "Things we could do in a laboratory over the cloud -- a laboratory that is nearest to the Space Station in Japan" -- took place at the Ichijo Hall from 4:30 pm through 5:20 pm. Magnitude 9.0 Earthquake and Tsunami hit North East Japan, followed by a severe nuclear plant accident

A 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami hit North East Japan, followed by a severe nuclear plant accident at Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant of TEPCO. Call for Research Proposals for the 2012 Summer Campaign

Dear colleagues,

You are invited to submit an application for research proposals for the summer campaign 2012 (July through early September).

In the 2011 summer campaign held atop Mt.Fuji, 17 researches of 5 fields (atmospheric chemistry, high altitude medical sciences, ecology, cosmic ray research, and communication technology) were conducted during July 11 to September 1.

The operation cost of the logistics at the research site was supported mainly by the fund from Mitsui & C. Ltd., performing the researches on ”A strategic plan of the valid utilization of Mt. Fuji for preservation of the global atmospheric environment” as well as the funds from the Watanabe Memorial Foundation for the Advancement of Technology and Japan Post Service Co.,Ltd.

Applications must be submitted in electronic form by no later than February 29, 2012 to dokiya@edogawa-u.ac.jp

Your proposals will be selected in the academic committee of the NPO, and the adopted proposal will be notified in the Web site before the end of March, 2012. The exact schedule should be negotiated after then.

Prof. Shiro Hatakeyama wins Prize of Japan Society for Atmospheric Environment

On Sept. 15, Prof. Shiro Hatakeyama, the chair of the board members of NPO was awarded the prize from Japan Society for Atmospheric Environment on his researches on the reaction mechanism of atmospheric pollution and its application to global trans-boundary pollution.

The summer campaign 2011 finished safely

Because of the approach of a typhoon, mountain crews closed the Mt. Fuji weather station and came down the mountain one day earlier than the schedule.

"The highest research laboratory in Japan" broadcasted in NHK-TV Eco-Channel

On August 26, "The highest research laboratory in Japan" was broadcasted in NHK Eco-Channel, which was also on air in the NHK TV, 4:30 on Aug. 3. Dr. Atsuko Sunaga introduced the results of NIES research on the year round observation of CO2 at the summit of Mt. Fuji, comparing with that of Mauna Loa.

Near real time data of O3, CO, SO2 started

On July 16, near real time data of O3, CO, SO2 were started to be open on the limited pages for NPO members by Dr. Shungo Kato of Tokyo Metropolitan University.

Summer Campaign 2011 started

On July 11, the summer campaign 2011(scheduled to last on Sept. 2) started after the successful connection of commercial electricity.

Radio Activity Measured at points of climbing trails

On July 9, Dr. Hiroshi Yasuda with his colleague of NIRS measured the radio activity at several points of the climbing trails caused by Fukushima Nuclear Plant accident.
The radioactivities of Cs-137 and Cs-134 were found to be very low as 0.03-0.05 μS/h which are near the background level. This information was broadcasted to the general climbers.

First meeting of Mountain Atmosphere Research Division(MARD)

On June 11, Prof. Kazuhiko Miura organized the first meeting of Mountain Atmosphere Research Division(MARD), which was founded in Tokyo University of Science. 6 oral presentations were given on Mt. Fuji research by NPO members.

31st Annual meeting of Japanese Society of Mountain Medicine

On June 11-12, 31st Annual meeting of Japanese Society of Mountain Medicine was held at Yoyogi, Tokyo, where about one 4th of the general presentation were on Mt. Fuji research.

Japan Geoscience Union had 2011 Annual Meeting in Makuhari, Chiba

On May 22-27, Japan Geoscience Union had the 2011 Annual Meeting in Makuhari, Chiba, in which Profs. Kazuhiko Miura and Masashi Kamogawa organized the “Mt. Fuji Research session” on atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric electricity and cosmic radiation, including 14 presentations of NPO members.
