Permafrost can be found only at the summit of Mt. Fuji in Japan. In the research of special moss and lichens, the effect of global warming on the distribution of permafrost will be elucidated.

This research is a part of our interdisciplinary research project to understand permafrost on Mt. Fuji. In 2010, a 10 m-deep borehole was dug to monitor permafrost on the summit of Mt. Fuji. We will analyze the monitored ground temperatures at a number of sites including the 10 m-deep borehole site. In addition, geophysical surveys will be applied to study permafrost distribution. Topography of the summit area will be also surveyed to evaluate processes of ground deformation.
